The Book of Revelation by Jeremy Payton, a paperback seen at an angle.

The Book of Revelation is the last book of the New Testament and the hardest to read. Seven seals, seven trumpets, a beast from the sea, a woman clothed with the sun, a city coming down from heaven. As a result, many readers open it, lose the thread and close it again. So this book gives the full text of the Apocalypse of John together with a commentary that walks through the visions in order and explains each one as it comes.

Above all, this is the book for anyone who has tried to read Revelation and got stuck. In particular, you want to know what the symbols mean, where they come from and what John was telling the churches of his day. You need no Greek and no prior study, because Jeremy Payton starts from the first vision and then follows the book to its last page.

What is inside

  • Origins and context. Who John was, when he wrote and what the seven churches of Asia were facing.
  • The text and its symbols. The full text of Revelation, with a commentary that unpacks the seals, the trumpets, the beast and the new Jerusalem.
  • Revelation and the prophets. How John’s visions answer the older prophecies of Daniel and Ezekiel, and how they compare with other apocalyptic writings.
  • Theology. What the book says about divine justice, the battle between good and evil and, in the end, the promise of a new creation.
  • Revelation today. What the visions mean for faith now, and why the book still unsettles and consoles its readers.

Between them, these parts follow one thread: the visions in order, from the letters to the churches to the new heaven and the new earth. In the end, the book answers the question every reader of Revelation asks: what is all this for?

How the text is presented

First of all, this is both the text and the guide. The full text of Revelation is here, and the commentary runs alongside it, so you never meet a vision without its explanation. If you want the bare text, any Bible will do. If instead you want to understand it, this is the book.

Moreover, the writing is plain, current English. The commentary follows the order of the book, so you can read straight through or keep it open beside your Bible, as one reader below does.
